Mona Lisa, Mona Lisa, Men Have Named You

Q: What do Hedo Turkoglu, Rafer Alston, Dwight Howard, Mickael Pietrus, Tony Battie, and J.J. Redick have in common? (in contradistinction to their teammates Nelson, Lewis, Lee, and Gortat?) Answer below.

A: None of them has a tattoo!

We shouldn't be surprised that Europeans Turkoglu and Mickael Pietrus have no tattoos. American ballers' obsession with tattoos hasn't taken hold prevalent in either Turkey or France. (In Islam, tattoos are considered haram (forbidden) and though Turkey is highly secular, there remain cultural mores against tattoos.)

Nor should one be surprised by Dwight Howard's lack of tattoos. The guy is a evangelical choir boy.

Nor should one be surpised by J.J. Redick's lack of tattoos. White guy who went to Duke. Nuff said.

(I know nothing about Tony Battie.)

That leaves Rafer Alston. Now his tattoo-less torso and arms ARE interesting. The guy was playground legend "Skip 2 My Lou" -- precisely the type of environment where tattooing is most prevalent. Maybe he's scared of needles?

CORRECTION: H.O.S.S. has brought to my attention that J.J. Redick actually has several biblical-themed tattoos on his torso (not visible in the photo I included above), as described here. Who would have thought that Redick, from the mean streets of Cookeville, Tennessee, is the most inked-up guy of those six?
